Wikia Search Engine Alpha Version: What Do You Think?
Jimmy Wales has launched what it’s been promising for a while – alpha.Wikia.com where it compete with Google search engine. Many time I waited for the alpha version of the Wikia Search engine but I already found that the search engine is not so good as promise has been.
I’m not really sure how this search engine will impact users, but reading some post it seems that has already little credibility among people who follow the development of the Search Engines. According to source it’s practically a copy of the open source Nutch software and contains an index of web pages created by Grub a company Wikia acquired last year.
I’ve tried today to use it and to be honest, I got poor search results with my site and I think who those people who use this are going have many disappointments until don’t there will be improve.
Just A Quick Refresher Of The Features:
- Users can add keywords to their profile
- If an user search for these keywords, an image shows the profile of someone related these keywords in the right hand column.
- Some search results will yield a “mini article” which explains the term in a couple of words
- User will be able to edit and improve results for searches they are interested in.
Another Social Bookmarking?
Through the additions of users profile, the possibility to include elements like photos, adding friends, and informations, Wikia Search it seems more another social media that a search engine. Wikia Search is simply a example of what can be created in a little time
using open source software and little money. Will it grow into something better? You can judge for yourself at alpha.search.wikia.com.
