Summary: 3D Printing is an exciting and relatively new field of making things. This method let anyone to print a lot of cool 3D-printed objects in short time, but have you ever thought to print a whole house?

I have already discussed in a recent article about this new technology and how it could ruin your business. Here’s the full article. Anyway, today I want to highlight as it might help you save money and material over subtractive manufacturing techniques in which material is cut, drilled, or shaved off, as very little raw material is wasted.

In particular what UK design firm 00:/ recently showed visitors to Milan’s most famous department store how to construct a wooden house from a downloaded kit of parts.

The WikiHouse is an open-source platform that allows designers from all over the world to design, download and share housing templates that can then be printed using a CNC milling machine or 3D printer.

As you can see, you no need for bolts or screws in order to slot together. WikiHouse operates under the creative commons license, so anyone is free to share solutions widely and based on their unique climatic conditions.

If you want know more about their earlier story about it go here, or click here to watch the interview with curator Beatrice Galilee. If you want start building this structure yourself, you can use the template, you can find directly here.

Once the structure is erected, it is ready for insulation, cladding, sealing and services. If you want to design and share your own wooden home, check out the WikiHouse website, they have an active community that is growing every day.

How To Save Money Buying A New Car

Summary: We’re big fans of Bruce Bueno de Mesquita, the author of The Predictioneer’s Game, a book about using game theory to get what you want in day-to-day life.

Game theory is a method of studying strategic decision making, that is mainly used in economics, political science, and psychology, as well as logic and biology.

People compete, and they always do what they think is in their own best interest. The idea behind this method is to let local dealers compete with one another on price in an open marketplace.

The book is intended to help people take decision when it comes to predict and engineer the future. Look at this short video explaining how to use these ideas to buy a new car.

Here are the basics of Mesquita’s method:

So let me lay out how to buy a car. It’s very easy. Figure out exactly which car you want to buy, make, color if it matters to you, options and so forth. Then do not go to a dealership. Let your fingers do the walking. Telephone all of the dealers who sell the vehicle you’re interested in who are, say, within a 50 mile radius, a 25 mile radius, 75, however far you’re willing to go.

To each of them make the same statement: “Hi, my name is so and so. I plan to buy such and such a car today at 5pm. I’m going to buy it from the dealer who gives me the best price. What is your best price?”

That is an awesome strategy and well worth utilizing. This technique was already mentioned in this video below. It’s a  about how to buy a new car without getting screwed. The idea is the same as Mesquita’s.

I wonder if this could work for used cars? We are planning to buy a new to us car later this year or early next year but there are so many variables with used cars (mileage, condition, model etc) that it would be hard to employ a tactic like this.

Where Does The Money Go: How The Average Consumer Spends Their Paycheck

Summary: Today I want to show you some charts, I found very interesting, to compare what an average person pays in total to a broader average and to see if the ways we spend our money are normal or does not.

Each of us track his or her expenses and manage it as well. We also compare it with others to see what sort of spending ranges we held as a population of relatively money-savvy citizens.

Yesterday I came across to the the Planet Money blog which has put together a couple of interesting charts representing how an average American consumer spends their paycheck. The results are pretty interesting for a money saving like me.

As you can see, Americans spend about one percent(o.9%) on alcohol, and another one percent on pets. Also, they spend 8.6% of their income on groceries, and spend another 5.7% of their income on dining out.

Although the 15% of our expenses is spent on food compared to 40% 60 years, other spend has risen more(e.g. the largest expenditure of the average household is housing) than enough to compensate for that even in real terms.

One year ago, The visualeconomics.creditloan.com also shown a nice dataviz of US consumer spending as of April 2009. So you can make a comparison on how people spent is money 4 years ago than today.

The average consumer spends on physical necessity, food, an average of $6,133 per year.

People are plowing more money than ever into housing. This is an average of $16,920 spent on housing. The second largest expenditure for the average consumer is transportation, with an average of $8.758.

Another large expenditure is healthcare. The average consumer spends $2,853 on healthcare each year.

The statistic on the size of homes is most shocking to me. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average new home was 2349 square feet in 2004, up from 1695 square feet in 1974 — and just under 1000 square feet in 1950.

Let me know if you like to compare your spending to others,  and what are your favorite sources for comparing numbers.
